Festival Season

In a week or so I will join with a crew of seven other photographers entrusted with the task of documenting Vancouver’s Folk Music Festival for 2011.  It is an intense, exhausting and utterly gratifying experience.

When shooting the concerts, I’m not so concerned with musical performance as with visual presence of the artist.  Photographically the key is to find the ways a musician expresses their energy and emotion. When this is done, the photograph can sing.

Some performers offer us the chance to create many photos that ‘sing’.   In the 2010 Festival the Haitian group, Boukman Eksperyans, partly propelled by the need to bring awareness to the plight in post-earthquake Haiti, gave an unmatched musical and visual performance.
